An interesting look at the progression of a men’s world record in long jump. Accurate measurement and recording of the best achieved performance in the long jump has been available since 1901.
The historical long jump performance, 813 cm by Jesse Owens, was the longest valid record of the era. Another US athlete Ralph Boston overcame performance from the Berlin Olympics after twenty-five years.
The current 895 cm record of Mike Powell, created at the Tokyo World Championships in Athletics, has been on the top of the long jump's record tables since 1991. Now, it is one of the longest-lasting athletic world records.
The timeline shows not only the dates of long jump performances but also the value of record jumps - including Bob Beamon’s incredible “leap into the 21st century".
